Pneumatic Actuation Systems

Aerodyne Controls designs pneumatic actuation systems for defense and aerospace applications that require precision and must avoid failure. Our actuators move flight surfaces, deploy landing gear, release weapons, and seal cockpits in environments where temperature, pressure, and response time leave no margin for error.

Built for Extreme Environments

At the core of this work are custom manifolds, bottles, and integrated assemblies built around redundant and fail-safe architectures. These systems are engineered for high-pressure operations and fast-response valve sequencing that can hold up under extreme temperatures, severe pressures, rapid actuation cycles, and the long service life that fielded programs demand.

Fin and Tail Actuation

Aerodyne Controls manufactures pneumatic actuators for wing and tail control rated up to 18,000 psi. These units use zero-leak designs, pyrotechnic initiation, pneumatic locks, and hydraulic dampening to deliver controlled, repeatable motion. For fin and tail actuation on laser guided bombs and laser guided training rounds, we also build 3,000 psi precision pneumatic pressure regulators tuned specifically for fin actuation control.

Valve Control and Sequencing

Reliable actuation comes down to how each pneumatic actuator control valve behaves under load. We pair precise valve design with fast-response sequencing so that motion happens in the correct order at the exact moment a mission requires it.

Actuator-Driven Applications

The same actuation expertise carries into complete systems that do specific, high-stakes jobs on a platform.

Weapons Release

These systems run at 3,000 to 5,000 PSIG and use a two-stage actuator. The first stage releases the safety lock. The second stage drives the bomb rack to release the weapon. They are MIL-STD-810 qualified and fly on the F-35 and the Predator/Reaper.

Emergency Landing Gear Blowdown

When the primary system is unavailable, these units supply 3,000 to 5,000 PSIG to force the gear down. They are qualified for military helicopters such as the CH-53K and for business jets, with manual or electrical activation and over-pressurization burst disks.

Our team also builds actuators for a range of other applications, including:

  • Canopy seal actuators
  • Field-deployed drone launching systems
  • Decoy release systems
  • Tactical insertion launch systems
